Investment Manager Search Consulting

Our professionals have conducted hundreds of manager searches. We devote extensive resources to maintaining our proprietary data base of managers whom we monitor closely.

Our investment manager search consulting process has three steps:
  • Definition of Objectives
  • Review of Potential Manager Candidates
  • Manager Interviews

The definition of objectives phase of the project addresses your goals for the portfolio, specifies the types of organizations you would like to work with and the various investment approaches that can be utilized to meet your needs. This discussion helps all parties identify areas of potential improvement in risk/reward characteristics, investment options and diversification.

Once objectives are established, Becker, Burke's professionals begin the due diligence process of reviewing potential manager candidates. In this phase of the project we focus on organizations that have a strong commitment to and qualifications for working with the chosen investment discipline. Our due diligence process assures that all qualified candidates are impartially and objectively screened and evaluated for their potential match with your plan. Decisions about manager candidates are discussed and reviewed by all professionals in the firm.

Upon completion of due diligence, we prepare written profiles of the candidates we are planning to recommend. These profiles present comprehensive information on each firm in a format which makes it easy to compare them on the basis of organization, client base, investment philosophy, decision process and historical investment results. All candidates are managers we are comfortable with in terms of their professional skills, organization, track records and qualifications. We verify each firm's interest in the search without revealing your identity in order to protect you from unwanted solicitations.

After the profiles are prepared, we meet with you to discuss the profiled organizations. During the review of candidates, we assist in the decision on which firms to interview by responding to your questions and concerns, bringing to bear our knowledge of the managers and experience in the selection process.

Once the finalists are selected, we schedule formal presentations briefing each organization on your specific objectives and concerns. We participate actively in the interviews to ensure that all issues are addressed and that all the information needed to make a sound decision has been brought to the table.

Following the selection, we assist our clients in fee negotiations and in the transfer of assets. Our experience shows that attention to these details can result in significant cost savings to our clients.

The process we have described above will assure you of a thorough and objective method of identifying and selecting the organization and individual most likely to accomplish your goals for the fund.

Our manager search data base includes a comprehensive representation of managers across the country and internationally, covering all major asset classes. In addition to the 600 managers we follow closely, we have access to information on most other firms in the investment business. We receive no compensation from managers, directly or indirectly, for inclusion in our data base.

All managers are rigorously evaluated before being recommended to our clients. We ascertain that each manager's performance meet the high standards required by the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR). Every effort is made to get behind the numbers in order to understand how a manager can be successful in the future. We meet face to face with the decision makers to understand their investment philosophy, decision process and business plans. We strongly believe that the strength of the organization and personnel are key to a manager being positioned to achieve good investment performance in the future.
